As the new season begins, it’s the perfect time to refresh and revitalize your space. What better way to do that than by giving your garden or houseplants a fresh start? Follow along on our latest field trip around town as we visit local greenhouses and explore new plant varieties and gardening tips to inspire your own green space!

We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some of the great local greenhouses we have! Big box stores may have a wide selection, they might even occasionally have that specialty plant you’ve been searching for in stock, but when you choose to shop local not only can you find that bucket list rare plant you have been searching for and you’re able to support your local community and receive expert tips on how to care for your plant! Especially if your thumb isn’t as green as you’d like it to be yet. Plus what better way to gather growing tips than with experts themselves.

First Stop: Chaparral Cactus and Succulents

As the name suggests, Chaparral’s specialty lies in a wide variety of cacti and succulents. In addition to these, they offer an impressive selection of drought-tolerant plants perfect for low-water gardens. Staying true to their name, their inventory leans toward larger species such as agave and prickly pear, making them a great resource for striking, resilient landscape options.

Valerie, the owner and founder, shared that the business began back in 2012. It’s a family-owned and operated venture, with most of the plants grown on-site from their own mother plants, which have their own dedicated section. Originally, they started out selling on Amazon, but quickly realized it wasn’t the direction they wanted to pursue. One of the main reasons for stepping away from that platform was their decision not to ship plants. With a bit of extra land available, they decided to build a greenhouse—and the rest, as they say, is history!

Did you know that cacti bloom? And not just any blooms, they produce some of the most stunning flowers I’ve ever seen! They told me that once the blooming season hits, everything sells out fast. It’s like the plants practically fly off the shelves! Be sure to follow Chaparral Cactus and Succulents to keep up with all their upcoming news!

Second Stop: Nettie’s Greenhouse

A newer addition to the area, Annette (or Nettie, as she’s known) opened Nettie’s in October 2024. This family-owned business offers a beautiful selection of exotic tropicals, lush ferns, and eye-catching monsteras. Whether you’re sprucing up your indoor jungle or expanding your garden, they’ve got plenty of unique plants to help it thrive!

She also creates beautiful pottery and charming propagation stations, both of which are available in the shop—perfect for thoughtful gifts! Stop by next time you’re looking to add something beautiful to your garden or home!

Nettie’s might be a picture-perfect greenhouse now, but getting it there was no small feat. When they first bought the place, it was in rough shape—practically falling apart. Nettie even had to get her general contractor license just to start fixing it up. But all that hard work paid off. You can really feel the love and care that went into the place just by taking a slow walk through the aisles. Every little detail tells a story of dedication and heart.

Third Stop: Windswept Prairie

An urban plant shop along historic Route 66, Windswept Prairie Plants carries a wide selection of specialty hard to find plants. From tropical house plants to beautiful orchids and air plants, or if you’re looking to create something of your own, Windswept Prairie Plants is just the spot for you!

Windswept Prairie has been a cherished part of Amarillo for five years, offering a unique blend of tropical houseplants, orchids, succulents, and cacti. Step inside and explore the lush selection of these thriving houseplants that is specially curated for lovers of the rare and hard-to-find.

Inside, you’ll also find a cozy, one-of-a-kind creative space where you can craft your own plant arrangement from start to finish. It’s the perfect spot to gather with friends, celebrate a special occasion, or simply enjoy a fun, hands-on experience surrounded by greenery.

Join us at the ‘Mother Like No Other’ event on Saturday, May 3, where Windswept Prairie’s plant truck will be on-site, offering a curated selection of unique houseplants to add to your collection.
