The Slow Strange is a one-of-a-kind gem here in the Texas Panhandle. The talented owners Nikki and Alex Casias create all of the unique handmade stained glass and art where each is carefully crafted with love and the finest detail.
“Our name, The Slow Strange, is a nod to living life noticing and appreciating the things around us that tend to get overlooked. Our world is filled with wonderful, scary, powerful and beautiful moments. When we teach ourselves to pay attention to these, we enrich our lives.”
We sat down with one of the Slow Strange’s owners, Nikki and Alex Casias, and asked them some questions about the business. To read more, follow along with the interview below:
You were born and raised in the Texas Panhandle. What is your favorite part about being a business owner in Amarillo?
We were both born and raised here and started dating in high school. We moved away for a while but both our families still live here and we were drawn back to be closer to them. Making the decision to live close to our parents and siblings is a choice we would make over and over.
Since being at the Collective, what has been your favorite part of it all?
Being apart of The Collective is a unique experience, there is nothing like it around town! We absolutely love that each booth offers something unique from one another, it’s the perfect place to lose yourself in. Our favorite part is the customers though! We know when someone comes here to shop they are looking for something unique to the area. It has given Amarillo a breath of fresh air and given a space to local artists to display their work in person.
We know that The Slow Strange is a one-of-a-kind shopping experience with so many unique pieces to choose from. Can you explain why and how you set yourself apart?
Everything we make is handmade and original, meaning you won’t find it anywhere else! We can customize any of our existing designs or create something new from scratch. Stained glass is becoming a lost art form and there aren’t many of us around. The craft is unlike anything else, it takes patience and can be quite physical. We love to create these pieces and love finding others who appreciate the art.
When you are not working at The Slow Strange, what do you enjoy doing during your free time?
We love to camp! We own a 1979 Chevy Van and converted it into a camper a few years ago! Before starting our business, we spent our time traveling the US. We thought we would continue to do so for a few years, but our dreams had other ideas and we decided to come home and pour our energy into our business. We still camp when we can, but it can be hard to manage doing both!
Besides that, we really don’t do much but make art! Because our work is our passion we tend to spend all our time on it. When we aren’t- we are watching TV, playing with our chickens or spending time with our families.
We are only a few weeks away from the new year! Can you tell us what you are looking forward to the most about 2024?
In May of 2024 we will be hitting a full year in business! This will be a huge accomplishment for us and we are very excited.
However, we are MOST excited to add more mediums to our art business. We love stained glass but we hope to learn more trades and add them to our product line. As artists we are always looking forward to new ideas and projects!
Is there anything else you would like us to share about The Slow Strange?
We are incredibly grateful to those who have spent their hard earned dollars with us. Every bit spent goes right back into our craft and supports our dreams. It can be daunting to share your work with others and it took us many years to believe in ourselves enough to do so. We have been met with nothing but kindness and support from our community, so thank you!
