What’s for lunch? I feel like for many of us Mexican is a go-to for breakfast, lunch, and, dinner especially living in Texas! I’m a sucker for corn tortillas and spicy salsas. You just can never go wrong with Mexican food.

This week I’m proud and excited to introduce to you Don Toños Barrio Food. Have you ventured out to this food truck yet? If you haven’t, you’re definitely missing out. It’s a northside gem!

The Barajas family immigrated from Mexico over 20 years ago with nothing but dreams of a better life. After immigrating to the US, Antonio Barajas spent over 17 years in the construction industry and raised his family with his wife Lorena Barajas right here in Amarillo, Texas.

However, after many years of hard labor, Antonio needed surgery on both of his knees which ultimately left him out of work. His two daughters Alejandra Barajas and Lorena Gonzales, came up with a solution.

In the middle of a pandemic, the two banded together with their families to create the concept for Don Toños Barrio Food and opened July 1st, 2020. The food is inspired by their hometown, Guadalajara, Jalisco and pays homage to their father (Don Toño).

“I did this for my parents. To give back to them for all of the years they’ve raised and supported us,” says Lorena.

While the sister duo created this business for their parents, Antonio and Lorena wake up at 5 am to prepare food for the day. Despite the knee surgery set back, her father still manages to work hard. It’s inspiring to see the hustle and passion behind their food.

“The support has been amazing, everyone has loved [the food] and it pushes us to work harder and harder to be better.”

Their extensive menu for being a food truck is pretty impressive. I can never leave with out getting the ‘tacos al vapor.’ They’re steamed tacos, but don’t let that steer you away. The key is the tortillas are brushed with a flavorful mixture of spices and fried before being filled, wrapped and then steamed. This cooking process creates one of the most flavorful tacos you’ve ever eaten.

And if it couldn’t get any better, every tortilla is hand-made. Are you hungry yet? Because I am all over again looking back at these photos!

We hope you get the chance to try out Don Toños. Let us know what you think, it was an honor getting to shout out this amazing local bizz.
